When I’m not pushing pixels or drawing Bezier curves behind a computer screen, I love working with my hands out in the shop...if you name something with an engine, there’s a good chance I’ve tinkered with it. So when I heard about a “truck” themed packaging project, I jumped at the chance to work on it. The inspiration for this project came from “old-time” fruit stands and delivery trucks that were a staple for the fruit orchards that have been a part of the Pacific Northwest for decades.
Combining the inspiration of an early 40’s farm truck with the rigid constraints of corrugate packaging and printing was an intriguing design problem. Aside from the functionally flat truck bed, the majority of the body shapes of trucks from the 1940s were composed of bulging, rounded curves. To help convey the look from this era, I used rounded shapes for the windshield and windows as well as a recognizable grill style. Along with these elements, I included a few other subtle cues that other car nerds would appreciate, including an “Easter egg” under the hood for people like myself who would inevitably take apart and unfold the “box” to see how it all came together.
