Wine Labels

Challenge
This was GiftTree’s first foray into high-end, white-label wine. The bottles retail from $50 to $200 per bottle and are from some of the most prestigious vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. The labels needed to have elegance and distinction to match their lofty provenance while adhering to the strict alcohol labeling regulations of the Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
Solution
The project stakeholders—including two oenophiles with refined palates and exacting standards—provided the names, copy, wine specifications, and bottle shapes. After determining label dimensions, I dove deep to choose the color palette, imagery, and typography for each label. For variety, I opted for a mix of elegant typography and more illustrative, pictorial labels. For example, Portico was produced at the Clos Pegase Winery and I chose to illustrate one of the winery’s most prominent features on the label.
Result
GiftTree’s introduction to the high-end wine market proved to be a huge success and they were thrilled with the labels. This was a rewarding experience for me and the clients alike. Through strict adherence to the regulations, the TTB’s Certificate of Label Approval process went off without a hitch. We were able to bring the wine to market within their deadline.
